Townsville Update

Written by: Cr Jenny Hill - Mayor Townsville | November 28, 2019

The year 2020 will represent an incredible milestone for the people of Townsville. This is the year we will celebrate the delivery of major projects that will define our region. Looking back on the year that was 2019 it’s difficult to fathom not only what Council has achieved, but what the city of Townsville has accomplished.

What began as a year of delivery for Townsville City Council quickly shifted gears as the unprecedented monsoon set us on a course of city-wide recovery, with Council leading the major clean-up effort estimated at $2.9 million across the city and the disposal of well over 27,000 tonnes of waste.

As we approach one year since the unprecedented weather event, collectively we should look back and appreciate how far our city has come. While the recovery of Townsville has been the highest priority for Council, we have not forgotten about what is important to our community and have continued delivering on our promises and building for our future.

We remain committed to delivering major job-creating infrastructure projects for Townsville, with Stage 1 of the 1.8m diameter Water Pipeline on track and steaming closer to completion. Providing long-term water security remains a top priority. The completion of the 1.8m diameter Water Pipeline is a crucial plank in Council’s 3-point water security solution alongside the Recycled Water Re-use Scheme, which will provide water for our sporting fields, public spaces and industrial usage, as well as the hugely popular $10 million Water Smart Package.

Adani continues to engage locals for employment, and we encourage more companies to make the move North.

As the New Year approaches, 2020 will see the completion of the North Queensland Stadium and I couldn’t be more excited for the events and opportunities awaiting our new venue.

The North Australian Festival of Arts was a commitment to the people of Townsville to create an annual arts and culture festival to be proud of. With over 100,000 people experiencing NAFA’s month-long escapades I’m proud to say NAFA will be back in 2020. I can’t wait to celebrate NAFA 2020 with all of you.

There’s nothing like the festive season to bring everybody together, and while Christmas should be joyful for all, it’s important to remember that for some it can be a particularly lonely and difficult time. I ask you to help spread the festive cheer by supporting the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal and remember all donations go to charities supporting families in need.

Stay safe on the roads this festive season and be prepared for what the weather may bring. Make sure you’re Disaster Ready and keep yourself up to date by checking out Townsville City Council’s Emergency Management Dashboard.

I sincerely wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
