Running a family-owned bakery takes hard work, early hours and a commitment to delivering on great product, excellent service and involvement in the community. That’s exactly the recipe local couple Sean and Belinda Smith use in their Castletown bakery.

Aussie grown (and baked)
We moved to Townsville from Ballina, NSW, where we had lived and owned a Bakers Delight bakery for over 14 years. (Bakers Delight is an Australian company which has operated in Australia since 1980.) An opportunity arose to purchase and develop a new Bakers Delight bakery in CastleTown Shoppingworld, and we took it! Our decision to move to Townsville, and base our bakery in Castletown was a good one, as the bakery has exceeded our expectations in both sales and customer growth since opening in March 2016.

More than just bread
We specialise in artisan and traditional breads, sweet and savoury treats and we offer a large range of health products. I believe the reason for our success is that we do what we promise we will do: We bake fresh daily products that we are proud of and sell them over our counter with happy smiling staff, who always create a pleasant atmosphere for customers. We carry out business everyday with the view that we are the community’s local bakery of choice and our customers love how connected we are.

Flour power
The local community has played an integral role within our business through supporting on-going fundraising campaigns and activities that have helped raise money for Hermit Park State School while also contributing to over $20,000 for the past three years to the Breast Cancer Network Australia. These funds have significantly helped local women affected by breast cancer. We (both Belinda and Sean) have also donated bread regularly to Rollingstone Lions for charity events. Having the support of the local community and their ongoing loyalty helps make a very big difference to the local people’s wellbeing which the team at Castletown are proud to be partnered with.

Fresh is best, local is even better
All of our bakery products are baked fresh from scratch, every day. We do compete with the big-name supermarkets as they too sell bread and other baked goods. However, their products are not baked from scratch, and feedback from our customers is that they prefer the quality and freshness of our products. Although it is convenient for people to grab their bread at the supermarket, choosing businesses like ours gives you delicious products baked fresh daily and the comfort of knowing that every sale helps a local business. 

People power
Nothing beats hard work and enjoyment in what you do. We have a strong culture within our business, work hard and have fun as well. We have been extremely lucky in having great staff, in the bakery and out the front. Without them, then, nothing works.
