The Shift Health and Wellness was started by a dynamic duo made up of a mother and daughter team; Clare and Maxinne Cochrane. The business is fuelled by Clare and Maxinne’s passion to pass on their knowledge and to heal the world on a Holistic level. They achieve this by utilising nature’s abundant healing foods to create change internally, which brings about change on an external level also, and using physical fitness to create changes to mood, hormones and physical aesthetics, as well as healing the emotional centre of the individual and teaching people about their own spirituality.

The answer to these questions and many more is within us all, but sometimes we need a guide to help us connect on a deeper level, to enable us to create a realistic plan to have us living the lifestyle we desire. Through making the right choices, and creating positive habits, you can live the life you currently might be thinking is unobtainable right now.
Did you know that food has an extremely close relationship to your mental health? The old saying ‘you are what you eat’ couldn’t ring more true. Our bodies are the machine and the food we eat is the fuel. The machine (our body) then produces the product of the food we consume which then ultimately controls our mind, thoughts, emotions and habits. Both of us share a passion for food and playing in the kitchen. This is where we really come together. We consider ourselves culinary alchemists. We see this as our unique gift; to be able to taste any food and recreate it in a raw or paleo form. We love to take peoples’ favourite recipes and create new and improved raw, vegan versions.

The Shift is a local holistic health resource that delivers a combination of workshops and teachings to help people and educate them how to make healthy choices regarding food, body, mind and spirit via coaching, informative workshops and cooking classes. We also create extremely tasty raw, vegan and paleo desserts that can be made to order. For those times you want to indulge, and not pay for it on the scales.

Clare started on her journey over 25 years ago working in the restaurant industry. “From an early age I have always had a love and fascination of cooking and food,” she says. Her fascination and interest in a healthy eating lifestyle and fitness grew when she had to heal herself after suffering through a long period of anorexia nervosa. She began teaching herself to eat healthily as well and to heal her body, mind and spirit as a whole. Clare eats a predominantly raw, plant-based diet as this is how she believes she reaches her optimal health and vitality levels. “I truly believe in the healing power of food and all of its abundant medicinal properties.”
I am always learning, deepening and growing my knowledge on health and functional nutrition, as such, I am currently studying nutrition, which I plan to integrate with my ‘Journey modality’ training to help delve into people’s emotional eating disorders, so that I can help them to heal themselves. Clare is an accredited Brandon Bays ‘Journey Therapist’, a reiki therapist and a Mathew Kenny Trained ‘Raw food’ dessert chef.
Maxinne has a passion for understanding nourishment on deeper level than what people are typically used to and taught. She is currently furthering her studies by undertaking a mentorship with Functional Nutrition Expert, Coach Jake Carter and is researching gut health on an extensive level and how this relates to the immune system and metabolic functioning. Maxinne also studies the unique healing properties of the earth’s super foods, then implements plans on where and how these properties can be used to heal conditions and add benefits to her clients. Maxinne is a qualified Wellness Coach, Holistic Health Coach, Therapeutic Nutritionist and a Fitness Instructor. She also runs women’s-only boot camps and designs unique nutritional and exercise plans specially for women. Her goal is to truly help her clients help themselves.
Our philosophy is that mediation, exercise, sunshine and natural unprocessed food is all you need to stay healthy and live a disease free life. Daily, we have health shots, gut healing fermented foods, fresh fruit and vegetable, nuts and seeds. We don’t eat any dairy, gluten or refined sugar. I believe this has attributed to myself not being ill in the last 20 years, not even a cold. If I do feel a niggle coming on, I use fruit and vegetables, honey and natural remedies to heal. As they say, ‘let food be thy medicine’. We have both learnt to eat intuitively and to listen to our bodies. Your body talks to you all the time, if you have an ache or pain, I believe it is due to an emotional component or something we have eaten that is causing a reaction in the body.
Soon, we will also be hosting holistic retreats in various exotic and relaxing locations. The first one being in the ever-so-cool Gymea Healing Spa in Byron Bay. Watch this space as more is to come.
Our first retreat will be held at Gymea in Byron Bay in March 2019. It will be a holistic, health and healing 4-day retreat to empower women of all ages. With lots of nature walks, organic vegan food, yoga, meditation, group empowerment talks, massage and bonding. We will be focusing on recharging and re-setting women over a few inspiring days.
