Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to your smile
Life can get busy, and it’s easy to overlook the small things when you get caught up in the rush of day-to-day life. One thing that should never be overlooked is the ongoing health and care of your teeth.
Everyone wants to maintain a beautiful smile and preventative dentistry will help you achieve this goal. It will also save you time and money, as it is considerably less expensive to maintain your natural teeth than to replace them. As we say, teeth are for life, and skipping even one regular check-up can lead to ongoing problems.
By seeing our friendly and caring dental team just twice a year for preventative dental care, you will help lower your risk of dental emergencies. Preventative dentistry is a combination of treatments that will keep your teeth and gums in the best possible condition. We can detect early any small signs that something is wrong, and at a stage when treatment will be easier, faster and economical. It is the ideal and most cost-effective way to preserve your natural teeth.
We always recommend our patients follow a good preventative dental care routine, both our Dentists and Oral Health Therapist can advise on this. Our qualified dental team use specially designed instruments that gently remove all hardened plaque (called tartar or calculus) from your teeth. Calculus builds up around the gum line and under the gums which are areas that are hard to reach, where your teeth meet your gums, and if not regularly removed will infect and inflame this area. Once all the calculus has been removed, your teeth are carefully polished, leaving you with that lovely ‘just been to the dentist’ feeling of having super-clean teeth. Polishing your teeth can help remove some surface stains as well, so as a bonus your teeth will look brighter than before.
Preventative oral care and maintenance should be continued at home in addition to your regular dental visits by following a daily hygiene routine. Brushing twice a day will remove food and plaque from your gums preventing calculus. We suggest using a mouthwash after brushing – being sure to pick one that is alcohol-free and antimicrobial for maximum benefits.
“Our Oral Health Therapist can also undertake fillings, check and clean in adults and specialises in children’s oral health.”
Now to the one thing that causes no amount of heart (or rather tooth!) ache – flossing. We know lots of people struggle to use floss and we can help you. Our dentists and hygienists are always willing to give advice and practical help on flossing techniques. We love educating patients so please just ask us for advice. We can also offer information on the best tools to use, as there are alternatives to dental floss that can be very effective and easier to use.
