International netball coming to Townsville for the first time
Netball isn’t anything new to Townsville. North Queensland loves the game… head down to the courts at Murray and you will get a glimpse of the regions passion for netball.
Often the beating heart of regional cities, sport can bring the entire community together. Townsville is no different and netball is central to this, with hundreds playing weekly. This makes even more sense to break new ground in the upcoming international test series and bring the Samsung Diamonds to Townsville for the first time ever.
Hot off the back of the Commonwealth Games, the Diamonds will take to the court on 10 October at the Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the Constellation Cup.
Both powerhouses of world netball, their longstanding history and differing game styles makes for a tantalising and entertaining brand of netball, all sports fans will enjoy.
For the first time ever, neither Australia or New Zealand are Commonwealth Games champions, putting a spotlight on both nations ability to bounce back ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Australia are hurting from their gold medal loss to England, while New Zealand will be out to put their first Commonwealth Games without a medal behind them. This unusual position for both nations only speaks to how competitive international netball has become in recent years – with the rise of Suncorp Super Netball, the world’s leading league a key factor in the development of nations such as England, Jamaica and South Africa. With high quality international competition and a rise in the games professionalism, netball has become a real driving force for women’s sport and a world-class entertainment product.
